The Corry Beavers varsity football team took the home field on Friday night as they kicked off their 2024-25 campaign against the visiting Rockets of Titusville. In front of a pack house at Sheen Field, Corry did not disappoint Beaver Nation as they walked off the home field with a 28-22 Victory.

The home team won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. The game was like a tug of war match at the beginning with Corry finally Breaking the ice with a 38-yard bomb from Nolan Carey to Blake Cook. Carey would tack on the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Titusville would answer back with a 16-yard TD run from their talented six foot 185 pound senior running back Jaxon Covell. The rockets ran a fake on the PAT and Ian McDonald threw a strike to Kameron Mong to complete the two-point play and the Rockets took the lead 8-7.

After a bad snap on a punt by the Beavers, and a fumble by the Rockets, Corry methodically moved down the field as Carey connected on passes to four different receivers Cook, Mason Savitz, freshman receiver Conner Sterling, and capped the drive off with a two-yard touchdown pass to Will Allen. Carey would put the PAT through the uprights and the Beavers took a 14-8 lead mid way through the second quarter.

With Just over 4 minutes left in the first half Covell took a snap from the shotgun and ran it into the endzone for a Rocket touchdown. After scrambling to the right, then all the way back to his left, McDonald finally threw a dart to fellow senior wide receiver Aidan Yoder in the back of the endzone for the two-point play and the Rockets regained the lead 16-14.

A big run from Nick Lesher, a huge diving catch from Savitz, a little shake and bake catch and run from Cook, and another throw to Savits had the Beavers knocking on the door again. This time it was a Run from Carey from four yards out that had the Beavers back on top. With the PAT, Corry took the lead right back 21-16.

A Sack from Landon Hasbrouck would be followed up with a big interception from Keaton Frisina with under 40 seconds left in the first half. Corry would take a shot but to no avail. The Beavers took the lead into the locker room.

After a stalemate most of the third quarter, the Rockets were moving the ball with a couple big passes from McDonald to tight end JJ Miller, but then disaster struck the Rockets. McDonald rolled out to the right, somehow tiptoed the sideline and was able to throw a bullet to the back of the endzone to Yoder for a touchdown, however, a flag for holding would take the score off the board. The very next play McDonald try to hit Miller in the endzone, but it was tipped away and then picked off by Sophomore Jack VanChieri to kill the drive.

Corry would take advantage of it with 10 minutes plus to go in the fourth quarter when Lesher would take a handoff and scamper 35 yards for the Beaver touchdown. Carey added the PAT for  a 28-16 lead.

Titusville refused to go away and would make it interesting when Covell gobbled up a 25 yard touchdown pass from McDonald. After a failed two point try Titusville trailed 28-22 and had to resort to an onside kick attempt which Corry took care of. The Beavers would eat up the remaining two plus minutes and end the game on a punt that rolled to the endzone as time expired giving the Beavers a 28-22 home opening win.

The big take aways from the game for the Beavers were balanced team play, solid clutch plays on defense when they were needed, and zero turnovers in the game. The offence was a balanced attack as well.

Carey hit eight different receivers and was 16 of 26 for 266 yards and 2 TDs. Lesher toted the rock 14 times for 77 yards and a TD. Savitz lead all receivers with 7 catches for 153 yards. The air raid was unleashed, the run game pounded the ground, and the Defense was ball hawking when they needed to be as Corry starts the season 1-0.

The Beavers will look to their second straight home game on Thursday night when they host the Dragons of Warren. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Make sure to Catch the Boxit-N-Lockit Pregame show at 6:30 PM on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream! www.deejexperience.com/corry-beavers .
