It was the last Friday night lights of the year played at Sheen Field, but this one was a special one. The Corry Beavers hosted the Harbor Creek Huskies which was going to be a tough game no matter what as Harbor Creek always brings a well-coached team. On top of that it was the first time the Beavers could clinch at least a share of the region four championship for the first time since 2012 when they were Co-Champions with Northwestern. Moreover, the Beavers were also celebrating senior night which added to the pot a little more pressure to get a win. Despite all the pressure, the Beavers turned all that energy to the field and capitalized on their opportunity with a 28-7 win over Harbor Creek.
Corry started the night off with Senior recognition around 6:20pm where each player, cheerleader, and band member were introduced as they walked the track and had their pictures taken with family. After the festivities, it was time for a 7:00 PM kickoff and much was online the line for a Beavers football team that was making waves after a huge victory at Fairview the week before.
Corry had won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, letting the Beavers defense that has been terrorizing teams most of the season set the tone. Aiden Trask would be the tone setter on the first play of the game dropping Tyshawn Jones for a two-yard loss on the first play of scrimmage. Harbor Creek who let Corry know that they were going to be in for a dog fight on this night though. The Huskies started chunking out some yards on the ground. On first and ten from the Beavers 29-yard line, Harbor Creek’s Heath Betza dropped back to pass and found Cameron Herman in the end zone for a Huskies touchdown. Betza kicked the extra point and Harbor Creek took the early 7-0 lead.
Corry would take their turn on offense and provide a mirror image of the Huskies opening drive. Nolan Carey ripped off a 22-yard run up the middle. The very next play Nick Lesher racked up a huge 20-yard run of his own setting up a first and ten at the Huskies 35-yard line. Two plays later, Carey uncorked a beautiful pass to Keaton Frisina who made a great catch in coverage for a Beavers Touchdown. Zach Turban added the extra point, and the game was tied with 6:52 left in the first quarter.
After a hot start with both teams scoring on their opening drives, there was a stalemate for the rest of the first quarter of play. In the second quarter the huskies ran the ball a lot picking up first downs and driving all the way to the Beaver nine-yard line when the Beavers defense finally held the Harbor Creek Offense to a four and eight. The Huskies would attempt a 25-yard field goal to take the lead. Corry had different plans as Mason Savitz got around the corner and laid out to block the attempt.
Corry used that momentum on the following drive and on a third and ten from their own 47 it was Frisina who would come up with another huge play for Corry as Carey connected with him on a 42-yard strike. Carey hit Blake Cook on a corner route for a seven-yard touchdown pass to cap off the drive. Turban hit the PAT to put the Beavers up 14-7.
On the Huskies following possession, Betza threw a strike to Herman for a total of 40 Yards, all the way down to Corry’s 25. Corry’s defense would hold though as the huskies would go for it on a fourth and seven forcing a turnover on downs. After a timeout, Carey had the Beavers on the move. From their own 32-yard line with a first and ten, Carey threw a pass to a leaping Savitz who made a huge catch for a 28-yard gain. On the next play Carey got hit as he threw, and the ball was intercepted by Tobias Vahey. Betza hit his receiver Gavin Zillman for a 26-yard pass play and the Huskies were quickly on the move. Corry’s defense would hold though as a fumble from Betza was recovered by Savitz. The Beavers took a 14-7 lead into the locker at halftime.
A scoreless third quarter saw the Beavers on the move towards the end. Corry would set up a fourth and goal from the five-yard line to start the fourth quarter of play. Carey threw a bullet to Cook for his second touchdown on the night. Turban tacked on the point after, and Corry widened their lead 21-7.
Corry forced a Huskies punt in the fourth quarter and set up shop at the 23-yard line. Carey kept the ball running off the right side and had it knocked out from behind by Tyler Angerer and the huskies recovered the fumble with great field possession. Corry’s defense would once again answer the bell as Harbor Creek was forced to go for it on fourth and 15 from the Beaver’s 29 line. Tyler Aderhold broke through and dropped Betza with a sack all the way back at the 41-yard line and the Beavers took over on downs.
Corry marched the ball all the way down the field draining the clock down to 2:41 to go setting up a fourth and goal from the ten. Carey would put another ball on Cook for his third touchdown reception of the night, this one, a game sealer as Turban kicked the extra point to make it a 28-7 score. That would be the final.
To cap off senior night and a share of the region 5 championship, the cherry on top was the last walk of the field by all the senior members of the football team, cheerleaders, and the marching band members. Friends and family lined both sides of the field at the hashmarks as the senior members walked the 100-yard gridiron arm in arm one last time. A tradition that strikes the heart strings in a final tribute to those who put so much work in their crafts for four years of their high school careers.
A special night indeed for Beaver nation. On the night it was Carey again leading the passing attack for the Beavers as he was 14 of 23 for 221 yards, four touchdowns and only one interception. He also led the ground game with 59 yards on 11 carries. Lesher had 11 carries for 46 yards and Lamech Albers had 38 yards on four carries. Leading the Beavers Receiving was Savitz who hauled in four catches for 87 yards. Frisina had two grabs for 73 yards and a touchdown. Cook had six catches for 45 yards and three touchdowns. Conner Sterling had one catch for 11 yards and Lesher had one for five.
Betza lead Harbor Creek passing going four of 10 for 96 yards and a touchdown. He did have two interceptions on the night. Zillman led the ground game with 94 yards on 15 carries. Herman led the Huskies with 69 yards receiving on two catches with a touchdown.
Corry improves to 7-2 on the year and 4-1 in region five with a share of the crown in a three-way triangle with Fort LeBoeuf and Fairview, who knocked off the Grape Pickers of North East 24-7 on Saturday. Corry will play their last regular season game on Friday as they travel to Oil City as they take on the Oilers. Opening Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
