The Corry Beavers football team traveled to Fairview on Friday night for a Region Five football game. After a string of homecoming games on the road, Fairview decided to change things up and instead of another homecoming game this week, Corry would have to play on a senior night for the opposing team. It just doesn’t seem to matter what the special occasion is for the opposing team as the Beavers always seem to be the spoilers of the party this year, and this game would be no different as they wrecked yet another party to the tune of 40-7 over the Tigers.
Fairview won the toss and elected to receive, but the Corry defense opened the night with a three-and-out, forcing a Fairview punt. Lamach Albers would get a piece of the punt, and Tyler Aderhold would pick it out of the air and take it back 28 yards giving the big man a punt return for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but Corry would have an early 6-0 lead.
Fairview would take their next possession from their own eight-yard line. They moved the ball well up to their own 44-yard line but were forced to punt again. Corry quickly cracked into the Tigers' territory on tough running from Nick Lesher, a pass to Mason Savitz, and a huge run from Albers.
On fourth and seven, Nolan Carey threw a quick wide receiver screen to Savitz who followed his wall of blockers all the way to paydirt as he stretched the ball over the goal line for another Beaver touchdown. Zack Turben tacked on the extra point, and it was 13-0.
Fairview took the ensuing kickoff to the house, but a pair of yellow flags found their way onto the field and would force the Tigers to set up shop on their own 29-yard line. Fairview moved the ball up to their own 46, and Corry forced a fourth and five. The Tigers went for it, but Corry’s defense shut the Tigers down, and Corry took over on offense.
Corry marched the ball right down the field, including a huge 25-yard run from Albers that set Corry up for a first and goal from the two as the first quarter expired. After a couple of attempts and a flag on the Beavers, Corry faced a third and eight. Carey uncorked a beautiful fade pass to the right back pylon to Blake Cook for a touchdown. The score was made by Turben, and Corry extended their lead to 20-0 with 9:57 left in the second quarter.
Strong running from Joseph O'Reilly had Fairview on the move. On second and goal from the 12-yard line, Carlo Cimino fired a bullet pass to Tyler DiVecchio for a Fairview touchdown. Daniel Lindenberger added the PAT, and the Tigers were on the scoreboard but still trailed 20-7.
After a touchback, Corry took possession with 4:20 to go in the first half of play. After some penalty issues for the Beavers, Corry set up for a third and 17 at their own 37. Lesher took a handoff on a draw all the way to the Fairview 35-yard line. A Corry timeout would be their last in the first half with 46 seconds to go. On the next play, Carey threw a dart to Marcus Meredith to the 25. A five-yard pass to Savitz. Carey had to spike the ball with 11 seconds to go. A pass over the middle to Cook at the two-yard line would momentarily stop the clock for a first down. As soon as the officials wound the clock, Carey slammed the ball into the turf to stop the clock with 1.5 seconds left in the half. Corry elected to try for a touchdown rather than kicking a field goal. It was another fade to the right pylon, this one hauled in by Savitz for the Beaver touchdown. The point after try from Turben was good as Corry extended their lead to 27-7.
The Beavers would get the ball to begin the third quarter of play. Corry drove all the way down to the Fairview 27 behind strong running from Lesher. The Beavers turned the ball over on downs after attempting a fourth and five. On the very next play, Cimino dropped back to pass and threw an interception as Keaton Frisina came away with the football, setting up the Beavers with a first and ten at Fairview’s 45. Corry would again turn it over on downs inside the Tigers' 20.
Corry’s defense came up stout again, setting up third and 15. Cimino dropped back to pass looking for Benford on a slant route. The problem was that number six was lurking from his linebacker position. Savitz picked off the pass at the 13-yard line and took it to the house for a Beaver touchdown. The point after attempt was no good, but Corry extended their lead to 33-7.
Another penalty on the Beavers during the return set Fairview up on their own 42-yard line. If there were any flaws in the Beavers' game on this night, it was penalties, but not even that could hold the Beavers back on this night, especially Corry’s defensive play. On third and four, Cimino dropped back to pass and threw a ball right to Keaton Frisina, who took it 37 yards to paydirt. The PAT from Turben was good, and the Beavers led 40-0, which would end up being the final score.
Carey, who led the Beavers in passing, was 12-18 on the night for 157 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 13 yards rushing on six carries. Savitz had six receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Cook had four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Meredith had one catch for 11 yards, and Frisina had one catch for nine yards. Corry had a great night on the ground, with Lesher leading the way with 12 carries for 92 yards. Deion Canady had 10 carries for 63 yards, and Albers had five carries for 43 yards.
For the Tigers, Cimino was 6-15 for 63 yards and a touchdown but also threw three interceptions, two of them were pick-sixes. O’Reilly led the Tigers in rushing with 29 yards on 13 carries, and DiVecchio had three receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown.
The Beavers improve to 6-2 overall and sit at the top of Region Five with a 3-1 region record. Fort LeBouef and Fairview are both 5-3 with 3-1 records in the region. Fairview beat Fort LeBoeuf earlier this year 10-0, and the Bison beat Corry 19-13. So that should set up a wild finish to the season with two games left. Corry will host the Harbor Creek Huskies on Friday. It will be their last home game of the year, and it will be Corry’s Senior Night. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM and it will also be live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream at www.deejexperience.com.
