The Corry Beavers football team hit the road on Friday night as they paid a visit to Saxon Field to take on the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers. Corry was looking to play spoiler for homecoming as they were trying to shake the homecoming loss off themselves from a week ago. Mission succeeded. Corry knock off the lakers 28-21 in a dramatic and exciting fourth quarter of play.
With Temperatures in the mid 70’s and a stiff 13 mph breeze, the Beavers found themselves winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half. Right on cue the Beavers went to work on defense with the tough job of trying to contain the explosive and shifty sophomore running back in Vinnie Feliciano. Corry would get a three and out and forced Mercyhurst to punt. The Beavers would start marching down the field, but an interception by Feliciano would end the drive.
Another three and out would force another but and a bobble on the snap would give the beavers great field position. Lamech Albers along with Nolan Carey would take the drive over leading to the first score of the game. From the 30 yard line Carey threw a little swing pass out to the Albers in the flat and Albers did the rest stumbling, putting his hand on the turf to keep his balance and stretching the ball over the goal line would put the Beavers on the board and Zach Turben added the extra point and Corry lead 7-0.
Corry held Mercyhurst to a fourth and five from the Beavers 47. Feliciano would get the call and Albers wrapped him up in the backfield with a host of Beavers in behind him. The Beavers started the march up field as the first quarter came to an end. The Beavers would continue the drive in the second quarter and a big screen to Blake Cook would give the Beavers fist and goal from the five that would culminate in a one yard touchdown run from Mason Savitz. Turben added the PAT for a 14-0 lead.
The ensuing kickoff was taken all the way back to the Beavers 40 yard line by Tyshaun Tate. With great field position, Mercyhurst would lean on Feliciano who eventually scored from four yards out. Carson Mertz would tack on the extra point as the Lakers cut into the Beavers lead 14-7. That would be the score as the game came to the end of the half.
The Beavers received the ball to start the third quarter and on tough running from Carey and Lesher, the beavers marched right down the field eating up over five and a half minutes off the clock. Lesher took a swing pass from Carey and scored the Beavers third touchdown from nine yards out. Turben added the PAT and the Beavers regained their two score lead 21-7. Mercyhurst would begin to drive but disaster struck in the name of Keaton Frisina. Lakers quarterback Everett Cotterill rolled out to his left and fired a pass and Frisina leaped up and said thank you very much. A chop block on the return would push Corry back but they kept possession. Corry would start their drive ending the third quarter 21-7.
The fourth quarter began and with it, so did the fireworks. Mercyhurst held Corry to a fourth and six from their own 41 and Corry was forced to punt and Mercyhurst would take possession at their own 34 yard line. One play is all they needed. A hand off around the left side, a missed tackle and shifty moves sprung Feliciano for a 66-yard touchdown run. Mertz tacked on the point after and the score was 21-14 Beavers.
Corry took over on offense and had a conundrum of penalties on third and five. Two delay of game penalties backed the Beavers up to their own eleven and it was third and thirteen. Then the Lakers were called for illegal contact that put the Beavers back at the original line of scrimmage for third and five. At the end of all that, Corry was forced to punt and a gorgeous punt by Carey put Mercyhurst back at their own 22.
Prep first run was stuffed by Albers for a loss of two bringing up second and twelve. A pass to wide receiver Bryce Schueth brought a third and one. That’s when lightning in a bottle struck again. Taking a handoff up the middle, spinning off a tackle, and off to the races was Feliciano. 71 yards to pay dirt for the Lakers as Feliciano’s monster night continued. Mertz added the extra point, and it was a brand-new ball game 21-21.
On the ensuing kickoff, not to be out done, Blake Cook fielded the ball at the seven yard line. Cook squirted through a small hole, spun off a tackle from inside his shoulder pads and took it 93 yards to the house. The Point after attempt was knocked through by Turben and the Beavers regained the lead 28-21.
With under four minutes to go, Mercyhurst tried to push the ball down field. Marcus Meredith was having none of it as he played the ball perfectly and picked it off at the 27 yard line. Corry was held to a three and out and was force to punt the ball back to the Lakers with 1:46 on the clock. Prep was forced to use their last time out after a fumbled snap setting up a fourth and six from their own 47. Cotterill took the snap and threw a screen to Feliciano who got all the way down to the Beavers 34 yard line and out of bounds with 38 seconds on the clock.
After an incomplete pass, a delay of game and a false start set up a second an twenty. Cotterill dropped back to pass and got hit by Landon Nickerson as he threw and the ball was intercepted by Albers. A knee by Carey officially ended the game with the Beavers winning 28-21.
Carey went 12 of 20 for 144 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also lead the Beavers in rushing with 86 yards on 15 Carries. On the other side of the ball it was a one man show as Feliciano had 35 carries for 262 yards and three touchdowns.
The win puts the Beavers at 4-2 on the year and they will head to North East Next Friday to spoil their second straight home coming game against the Grape Pickers. Opening Kickoff is Scheduled for 7:00 PM. Watch it live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream.
