The Corry Beavers football team traveled to the Oil Field on Friday night to take on the Oilers of Oil City. Another week, and another special night for the Beavers to spoil. The Oilers were looking to Celebrate their seniors on the last night of the regular season at the Coach Pat Patterson Complex. Corry, however, would play spoiler again as they ruined the party with a 26-21 win.

After some tough play in the first quarter, it would be Oil City who struck first. Igniting the Oiler fan base was Junior running back Dawan Cruz who toted the rock into the endzone from two yards out. Senior kicker Hank Lockhart added the extra point and the Oilers lead 7-0.

On the proceeding drive, Corry had the ball with a third and seven senior quarterback Nolan Carey connected with junior wide receiver Tucker Jackson on a 42-yard-deep ball to set the Beavers up at the Oil City 24-yard line. A couple of plays by Marcus Meredith and Lamach Albers had Corry set up first and goal at the three when Carey found a wide-open Blake Cook for a three-yard touchdown pass. Zach Turban put the PAT through the uprights, and it was tied up 7-7.

The next scoring drive would not happen until late in the second quarter. With 2:22 to go in the first half, Oil City was forced to punt from their own end zone. Corry set up shop at the Oilers 47-yard line. Oil City forced the Beavers into a third and ten. Carey took the snap and looked for a target to through to. Not seeing anyone open, he took off on a scramble play picking up 16 yards and a first down. From there, Corry marched down the field on back-to-back completions to Mason Savitz. An Oil City sack and a couple incompletions had Corry at fourth and 17. That’s when Carey uncorked a pass to the back of the end zone to Savitz for a Beaver touchdown. The Point after try was no good, but Corry would take a 13-7 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Oilers received the second half kick off to start the third quarter of Play. Corry quickly held Oil City to three and out. A good punt from the home team pinned Corry deep in their own end as the Beavers started the drive from their own 15. Carey and company went to work. Tough running from Nick Lesher and a surgical passing attack had the Beavers on the move. The drive would stall however as Corry failed to convert a fourth and 15. If anything though, it was a massive field position flip.

That’s when the Corry Defense would come up with a massive play. Holding the Oilers to a third and 16 it was senior Kael Albers making another big play this year. Cole Findlay dropped back to pass for the Oilers as the Beavers brought massive pressure. Findley threw it right into the belly of Albers and Corry took over first and goal at the seven. A quick pass to Savitz had Corry down to the one. Lesher would cap off the short drive two plays later for the third Beaver touchdown on the night. Turban Connected on the PAT and Corry Led 20-7.

The Oilers would mustard some serious will in the fourth quarter though. With no panic, a strong short running game, and a sprinkle of short throws, the Oilers were on the move and would get the crowd re-energized on a short nine-yard pass from Findley to his Sophomore full back Lincoln Galla. Lockhart tacked on the point after, and the Beaver lead was trimmed to 20-14.

Disaster struck Corry on a second and ten from the 11. Carey’s pass was deflected at the line by Oil City’s bi 6’3 Senior Kamdyn Reagle. The ball fluttered right into the hands of Junior Spence Singleton for the interception. Oil City punched the ball into the endzone five plays later as Findley found his running back Cruz on a short pass for the Oiler Score. Lockhart would again connect on the point after try and the Oilers took the lead 21-20 with 6:43 to go in the game.

Like they have shown all season long though, Corry refused to go away, and their resilience, heart and determination was put on full display, even for a game that didn’t really mean anything other than another dash in the win column. Corry would not back down. Corry took the touchback and started on their own 20-yard line.

Carey hit Cook on a screen pass and Cook did what he had done all year. Following his blocking Cook burned the turf with his speed ripping off a huge 28-yard pass play. Carey would then hit Keaton Frisina on a slant route for an 18-yard pass play. A short pass to Lamech Albers, a short run and a flag on the Oilers set Corry up with a first and 10 at the Oilers 12-yard line. That’s when Carey tossed a touch pass to Frisina for the go ahead and winning score. Corry failed to convert the two-point try but held off the Oilers for the remaining 3:14 to secure the win.

Carey led in passing yards for Corry, going 23 out of 40 for 228 yards and three touchdowns and one interception on a deflected pass. He also led Corry on the ground with 91 yards on 12 carries. Carey Tied Scott Frisina's single season touchdown passes record with 25 on the year. With 114 more yards on Friday he can break the single season mark of 2065 yards also held by Frisina. Frisina currently also holds the career passing yards record at 5,078 yards and 55 career touchdown passes. Both can fall to Carey with 234 yards and three touchdown passes in Corry next game.

Savitz lead all receivers with eight receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown. Findley led the oilers passing attack going 10 out of 23 for 91 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw one pick on the night. Cruz led the Oilers ground game with 77 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.

Corry finishes the regular season 8-2 on the year and heads to the PIAA district 10 playoffs. The Beavers will play in the quarterfinals as they will head to War Memorial Stadium in Warren where they will face the Fort LeBoeuf Bison on Friday November 1st at 7:00 PM.
