Corry Hands Girard a Lopsided Loss at Home

By Scott Lockwood

The Corry Beavers football team looked to recover from a loss to Fort LeBoeuf last Friday, and from a yard out no less. In much better weather on the road, Corry would get themselves back in the win column with a lopsided win over the Girard Yellow Jackets 52-18.

As Girard used the night to celebrate military appreciation night, the Yellow Jackets won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. From that point on, it was all Corry as they scored early and often. Four first-quarter touchdowns would set the cruise control for the Beavers on the night. The first came on a dart from Nolan Carey to a wide-open Mason Savitz for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was missed. The second touchdown came on a 30-yard strike from Carey to Will Allen. Zach Turben hit the PAT, and the Beavers were up 13-0 in the blink of an eye.

The third touchdown of the first quarter came on a 21-yard bullet from Carey to Nick Lesher. Turben added the PAT, and Corry led 20-0. That’s when Savitz would turn around and score again, this time on the defensive side of the ball. Savitz timed a pass perfectly, stepped into it, and took it to the house for a 44-yard pick-six. Turben hit the PAT for a 27-0 Beaver lead.

In the second quarter, Corry found paydirt twice, both coming on carries from Lesher. One from 14 yards out and the other was from 5 yards out. Both PAT tries were unsuccessful, but the Beavers would hold a 39-0 lead at halftime.

The second half saw a lot of JV players in the game for Corry. The Yellow Jackets would finally get the goose egg off the board by way of a blocked punt with a scoop and score by Jesse Marino. Girard would fake the extra point to go for two. The try would fail, and Corry held on to a 39-6 lead.

The next Beaver possession would lead to another score. First, Lucas Baker hit freshman Conner Sterling on a quick hitter, and Sterling proceeded to break it to the outside with his speed and took it 47 yards upfield. On the very next play, Deion Canady took the handoff and scampered 18 yards for a Beavers touchdown. The PAT was no good, and Corry led 45-6.

Girard scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ryan St. Julian to Kolton Miller. The two-point try was no good, and the Yellow Jackets cut into the huge lead... momentarily. The ensuing kickoff would pose a problem, though. Allen would receive the kickoff and return it to the house for an 82-yard kick return for a touchdown. Turben connected on the PAT, and Corry extended their lead to 51-12. Girard fired back with an eight-yard pass from St. Julian to Tyler Mays. A failed two-point conversion would lead to a 52-18 final score.

Corry’s defense held Girard to 139 yards total offense and just eight first downs on the night and had three takeaways to boot. Corry had 344 yards on offense with 18 first downs on the night. Carey went 11 of 15 for 129 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. Lesher led the way on the ground with 56 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Lamech Albers had 40 yards on eight carries, Carey had three carries for 24 yards, and Canady had five carries for 24 yards and a touchdown. Receiving for the Beavers was led by Sterling who had 47 yards on one grab. Allen had three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown, Albers had three catches for 32 yards, Savits had three grabs for 30 yards and a touchdown, Lesher had two grabs for 27 yards and a touchdown, and Jackson Lathrop had a catch for eight yards.

Corry improves to a 3-1 record on the year and will celebrate homecoming on Friday, September 20th. The game will not be so easy, though, as the Beavers will host the General McLane Lancers, who are also 3-1 coming off a 62-0 rout of the Franklin Knights. On a side note, the Lancers are averaging nearly 48 points a game while allowing just 20 to their opponents. The Beavers are going to need all hands on deck for this one, both on the field and in the stands. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. If you can’t be there in person, you can watch all the action live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream www.deejexperience.com/corry-beavers.
