Corry JV Volleyball Coach
In their final match of the 2024 season, Corry JV earned their 13th consecutive win by beating Saegertown in three sets on the road Thursday night. 25-16, 20-25, 15-7.
Saegertown was an athletic team that served well, and also controlled the ball well. It was great to be able to end the season playing a team that put up a fight. In the end though, the same recipe that Corry has used all year, yielded the typical Corry result, another win. That recipe included a serving percentage of 92% while serving to weak spots on the court, unmatched hitting efficiency by any team we have played all year (.206 as a team during this match), adequate passing to keep the offense running, very good defense (62 digs), and a positive attitude.
In the first set, Corry came out firing on all cylinders. Corry served tough and kept Saegertown out of system most of the time. With the score tied 4-4, MH Rylee Nickerson served eight straight points including an ace to build a large Corry lead. Six different Corry hitters scored a combined 17 kills in the set, hitting .385 on 39 attempts with only two hitting errors. Saegertown did not roll over though, with decent ball control, they were able to muster enough offense to keep Corry defenders busy, 26 digs in the set. Setter Haley Mumau and DS Ellie Carey had seven digs each. In most of Corry's matches this season, we would not have 17 kills and 26 digs in a complete match, let alone in one set.
In set two, there was a little let down in Corry's ability to focus. There were a lot of long rallies and both teams battled hard. Six Corry hitting errors and four uncharacteristic serving errors led to a few Saegertown runs that proved too much to overcome.
Set three saw a more focused Corry dominate in hitting, nine kills to zero in the set. Outside hitters Regan Kemp and Lauren Brundage had eight of those kills, and right side /setter Naomi Brown had a kill. Corry defenders, led by Libero Ali Yetzer (seven digs in the set), were able to thwart a multitude of Saegertown attacks, digging up 20 balls in the shortened set.
This was a great way to end the season against a competitive Saegertown team. Outside of our first match against Freeport, Corry only lost two sets in regular season play in route to 13 straight victories. In tournaments, Corry won all four that we attended and lost only one set in tournament play. This can be attributed to a very balanced and deep team in all the different positions, and to their ability to take and learn from a tremendous amount of feedback from the coaching staff throughout the season. They have been a pleasure to coach and the coaching staff looks forward to seeing them continue to learn, get better, and have fun as they write the next chapter of Corry Volleyball. The future is bright for Corry Volleyball!
Notable Play and Statistical Leaders
The serving leaders were Nickerson (9 service points, 1 ace), Mumau (7 service points, 2 aces), and Carey (6 service points, 2 aces). Corry hitters scored 34 kills on 102 attempts: Kemp (16 kills), Brundage (8 kills), Nickerson (4 kills), Brown (3 kills), RH Katie Downey (2 kills) and MH Kendall Donoghue (1 kill). The team combined for a record 62 digs, led by Yetzer (15 digs), Carey (14 digs), Kemp (10 digs), and Mumau (9 digs). Mumau had 25 assists, Brown 6 assists, and S Ava Hallberg 2 assists.
The Corry JV Volleyball mission now is to support our Varsity program in their bid for a District 10 title and a run at the PA State Championship!
