Corry JV Volleyball Coach

Corry JV claimed a home victory over Seneca in 3 sets. It was senior night, and a lot was going on besides volleyball. The key to this match was all about staying focused and playing volleyball amid the excitement and fun distractions of the anticipated ceremony.  When it counted, Corry showed a dominant performance and that they were up to the task. Beavers defeated the Bobcats 25-5, 17-25, and 15-6 setting the stage for a great night.

Seneca arrived late, had an abbreviated warm up, and had a very rough start. In the first set Corry overwhelmed Seneca with near error free and focused play.  Setter Haley Mumau went on an 8 point serving run followed by a quick side out and another 8 point service run by DS / Libero Ali Yetzer. Within minutes the score was 17-2 in favor of Corry and the route was on.  Another ace from MH Rylee Nickerson, and 2 more aces from S Naomi Brown and it was over.  Corry served 7 aces in the set, but it was not serving alone that got the job done.  Corry hitters, led by OH Lauren Brundage (4 kills in the set), were hitting the ball with precision and efficiency.

In the second set, there were Corry lineup changes made to help keep everyone on their toes against a weaker opponent.  Players switched positions and got to try new things.  This added stress and there was a noticeable let down of the focus on the fundamentals of good volleyball on the part of Corry.  In total, Corry had an uncharacteristic 17 unforced errors in the set including 10 hitting errors.  Although Corry started gaining some momentum in the end of the set, it was not enough to win the set.  It is all part of the learning and maturity process.  Losing a set provides opportunities to be stretched,  exposes things to be worked on, and ultimately leads to future success.

In set 3, Corry returned to a regular line up and the result was dominant and relatively error free play.  Serving runs by Mumau and OH Regan Kemp combined with 5 kills from  Kemp and Brundage put the set away.

Throughout the match Corry servers were dominant,  97% serving percentage and 13 aces!   Serving leaders were Mumau (11 service points, 2 aces),  Yetzer (9 service points, 2 aces),  Brown (5 service points, 3 aces), Libero/ DS Ellie Carey (5 service points, 1 ace), and Kemp (5 service points and 3 aces.  Brundage had 9 kills, Kemp 3kills, MH Kendall Donoghue 3 kills, RH Katie Downey 2 kills, Mumau 2 kills, and Nickerson 1 kill.  Defensively Yetzer led the team with 5 digs, followed by Brown and Mumau with 4 digs each.   Mumau had 15 assists and Brown had 6 assists.  Though it did not show in the stats, MH Morgan Vanderschaaff and RH Shawntel Dyne contributed with defensive play at the net and offensively with keeping their hits in play.

Corry JV improves to 7-1 on the year and will play Saturday as they travel to Maplewood for their JV Tournament. Their next match will be Tuesday at Fairview. JV at 6:00 PM with varsity action to follow.
