Corry Volleyball Head Coach

Corry volleyball has a saying - “We Belong Here” and the word “here” applies to the District 10 finals… 9 consecutive years and the 10th year out of the last 11 seasons.  Corry swept Fairview to advance to the finals on Thursday night and earned the automatic berth into the PIAA State Playoffs. The Beavers toppled the improving Tigers 25-18, 25-13, and 25 17.

In the first set, Corry jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a kill by senior middle hitter Aubrey Chase, a block by senior opposite hitter Allison Sawyer, and two service aces by senior outside hitter Halle Albers.  Fairview fought back to a 2 point deficit at 7-5 and was as close as 3 points (16-13) when Sawyer had another blistering kill from the right side to make the score 17-13.  Senior middle hitter Sadye Dyne had a kill and then Sawyer served an ace to force Fairview’s first time out trailing 13-19.  Corry cruised the rest of the way to win 25-18.

The second set Fairview scored the first point of the game, but Albers had two more service aces (she had a match high 7 aces) and Chase had another kill to go up 4-1. Dyne and sophomore Grace Allen had a big block and then Dyne teamed up with Sawyer for another block to stretch the lead to 8-3 and Fairview called timeout.  Senior defensive specialist Sydney Woods, who had a career night picking up 18 digs, collected a service ace and then senior libero Makenna Moore had back-to-back service aces to help Corry stretch the lead to 19-7.  Corry maintained the 12 point advantage and closed out the set 25-13.

The third set was the most competitive with the lead going back and forth and the set score tied at 10-10.  Corry went on a five point run with two service aces by Albers and another Chase kill which was set up by senior setter Payton McCray.  Fairview fought back to 15-13 but then Allen had a kill, followed by another Sawyer kill and three Alber's kills which made the score 22-16, Corry.  Senior opposite hitter Emmalee Carr had her last of three kills followed by the last Chase kill to close out the match 25-17.

“I thought our experience of playing in lots of District 10 playoff games showed dividends tonight, the team played calm and under control throughout the evening.   Fairview has a really nice setter and three different hitters on the outside and the middle, so scouting them was challenging, but the kids put in the time to understand the tendencies and communicated well on and off the court to put our defense in the right spots all night.   We talk about our balanced offense quite a bit, but tonight it was the defense… Sydney Woods had a career high 18 digs and was everywhere, not to mention Makenna Moore picking up 14 digs.” Said coach Goodsel.

“The team is excited to participate in another District 10 finals and to have qualified for the PIAA State Playoffs.  We’ll enjoy tonight and then get to work preparing for a very good Cathedral Prep team that swept Cochranton.” Continued Goodsel.

Corry’s overall record improves 15-1 and will get ready for that District 10 championship game Thursday night. No tricks but surely a big treat is in store for volleyball fans when these two teams collide. The time and place should be announced first thing Wednesday morning and DeeJ Experience has submitted their request to broadcast the match. Now we patiently await for more information to come.
