Blog Report By Kelly Goodsel

Corry Volleyball Head Coach

Corry volleyball made the quick trip to Fort LeBoeuf high school and made quick work of the Grove City eagles.   Corry, seeded #1 in the District 10 playoffs, beat the 8th seeded Eagles 25-9, 25-16, 25-11.

The first set both teams showed some early nerves with shaky serve receive and a few hitting errors.  Corry was up 5-4 when seniors Sadye Dyne and Emmalee Carr combined for a big block and Corry was off and running, Halle Albers and Allison Sawyer hit back-to-back kills forcing the first Grove City timeouts as they trailed 13-7.  Sophomore outside hitter Grace Allen had a kill off a Payton McCray set and then Grace and Aubrey Chase combined for a block pushing the score to 21-7 and a second Grove City timeout.  With junior Brynley Watrous serving, Aubrey Chase had a kill and then Sawyer had another one and Corry was up 23-7.  Sophomore Regan Kemp had her first playoff kill and Corry won the set 25-9.

The second set had a similar 5-5 early score when senior libero Makenna Moore served an ace and Emmalee Carr had a kill down the line.  After three service aces by setter Payton McCray and a few Grove City errors Corry led 14-6.  Coming out of the timeout, Payton made a crazy dig that Allison Sawyer kept alive, and Makenna Moore passed a freeball just over the net and Grove City watched it fall to the floor.  With the momentum, Albers had a kill followed by two Sawyer kills, and Grace Allen another kill pushing the lead to 20-8.  After a few sloppy plays by Corry, sophomore middle hitter Rylee Nickerson registered a kill, and the set was closed out with another Aubrey Chase kill.

The third set was also tied up 5-5 when Corry took the lead for the last time.  Allison Sawyer had back-to-back service aces and sophomore setter Haley Mumau had a perfectly placed setter dump to push the lead to 11-7.  Sawyer and Albers each had another kill for their team-leading 6 kills in the match and then Albers served consecutive aces to exhaust Grove City’s last time out at 23-10.   Sophomore Ali Yetzer came in and served an ace and Aubrey Chase finished the match with an impressive kill.

“I was pleased with our focus throughout the entire match and despite the typical first playoff game jitters, we played pretty efficiently.   The real difference in the match was from the service line where we had 16 service aces to just 4 errors… so, essentially we were starting each game ahead by four points.” Said coach Goodsel.

We continue to be balanced with Halle, Grace, and Allison leading the team with 6 kills each, and then Aubrey and Emmalee each hit 3 kills.  Halle had 6 service aces, Payton had 4, and Allison had 2.  Because of the tough serving, there weren’t a lot of defensive opportunities, but when the eagles hit the ball, Makenna Moore collected 13 digs, Payton McCray had 7, and Sydney Woods had 5.  McCray and Haley Mumau quarterbacked the offense with 18 and 10 assists respectively.  Sayde Dyne led the team with 2 blocks.

Corry’s overall record is 14-1 and are Region 4 champions with a 9-0 region record.  Corry will play the Fairview Tigers next Tuesday, October 29th at Fort LeBoeuf at 7:30pm.
