Corry Volleyball Head Coach
The Corry community celebrated nine special seniors and their families on Thursday night while taking care of business on the volleyball court against Seneca. The Beavers picked up their third straight sweep in as many games this week by defeating the Bobcats 25-19, 25-7, and 25-9 on the night.
Corry volleyball is coming off of two years of below average senior representation, in 2022 Corry saw two seniors (Tayler Elchynski and Lakota Donaldson) and last year, Corry had no seniors, so this years class of nine student athletes is above average and may be the largest class size ever. Halle Albers, Emmalee Carr, Kendyll Chamberlin, Aubrey Chase, Sadye Dyne, Payton McCray, Makenna Moore, Allison Sawyer, and Sydney Woods were all introduced by the public announcer along with family members and then cheered by Corry crowd. In addition, the talented seniors led the crowd in the pre-game national anthem. After a few tears and pictures, it was time to play some volleyball.
The first set was sloppy on the Corry side of the net with inconsistent passing and Seneca scored several points on setter dumps and a few swings by their big middle hitter. Corry trailed 3-2 before taking the lead and never relinquishing it. While Corry led 90% of the set, it was an uncomfortably close set until the lady beavers scored the final three points to win 25-19. With the emotions of the senior night festivities behind them, the Corry team played as expected and dominated sets two and three (25-7, 25-9).
The highlight of the night was the Corry volleyball tradition of substituting out each senior to the applause of the crowd and fellow teammates and warm embrace from Coach Goodsel. Opposite hitter Emmalee Carr was the first senior to be recognized after she pounded a kill down the line, followed by all of her classmates; defensive specialist Sydney Woods, outside hitter Halle Albers, middle hitter Sadye Dyne, opposite hitter Allison Sawyer, middle hitter Aubrey Chase, and second to last was Makenna Moore she hit a kill as an outside hitter (she normally plays libero), and finally the last senior, setter Payton McCray came off the court.
The second highlight was getting an early look at next year’s team – a combination of juniors (Bailee McCray, Sydney Mineo, and Brynley Watrous) playing the back row and the offense led by sophomore’s (Grace Allen, Regan Kemp, Haley Mumau, and Rylee Nickerson).
“I’m proud of how this group completed the two week gauntlet of homecoming week, two big wins and then the Meadville tournament, then this week of three matches in a row, including senior night festivities. It has been emotional, exhausting, challenging matches and the team has been able to manage the roller coaster and perform at a high level… it isn’t easy.” Commented coach Goodsel.
