Corry volleyball racked up another double sweep with the JV winning in two sets and the Varsity sweeping Girard in three straight sets, both teams scoring many points from the service line. Corry flexed their muscle winning 25-4, 25-12, and 25-13.
The normal starters (setter Payton McCray, outside hitter Halle Albers, middle hitters Sadye Dyne and Aubrey Chase, opposite hitter Allison Sawyer, defensive specialist Sydney Woods, and libero Makenna Moore) started off the first set beating Girard 25-4. Of the four points, Girard scored one point on a hit down the line, two of the points were on Corry missed serves, and one point on a missed hit into the net.
The second and third sets were played by primarily underclassmen, sophomore outside hitter Grace Allen led the match with 10 kills and fellow sophomore Haley Mumau led the match with 16 assists. Two more sophomores: Regan Kemp had four kills playing opposite hitter in set one and outside hitter in sets two and three; and Rylee Nickerson played opposite hitter in set 2 and middle hitter in set 3, collecting two kills and two digs. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Brundage had two kills in set 3.
Defensively, the three juniors (Bailee McCray, Sydney Mineo, and Brynley Watrous) contributed 6 digs, 3 assists, and two service aces. Collectively, Corry had 20 service aces (Chase, Kemp, and Woods had 3 each, Allen, Albers, Mineo, and sophomore Ali Yetzer each had 2, and Sawyer, Moore, and Sadye Dyne each had one) that kept Girard out of system all evening.
“We knew coming into the match if we kept our errors to a minimum, we should be in control of the match. The first set we played as expected and the 25-4 scored reflected the mismatch in skills. The second and third sets weren’t as clean, but when you play 16 different players, a few mistakes can be expected. It was a great opportunity for some of the younger players to get plenty of varsity time and an opportunity for us to focus on improvement opportunities in practices this week.” Said coach Goodsel.
Corry improves to 10-1 overall and are undefeated at 7-0 in region play. The Beavers remain ranked number one team in the state in the PVCA rankings. They will ultimately lock up the region 4 championship with a win over the North East Grape Pickers on Thursday night at home in the Beaver Dam. It is Pack The Gym Night! The Corry pep band will be in attendance as well as the Union City Drum Line. It is sure to be a rocking atmosphere so get out there and support these awesome kids! JV opening serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM with Varsity action to follow. There will be special announcements following the varsity action as well!
