Corry Volleyball Head Coach
Corry volleyball team finished third in the third tournament of the season at Cochranton high school on Saturday. The Beavers swept the competition in pool play, going 10-0, won the quarterfinals easily, and then fell to Maplewood in the semi-finals.
One of the advantages of playing in tournaments is the challenge of playing different teams and the Cochranton tournament provided seven different opponents for the lady beavers. The first two games were against the WPIAL leading Quaker Valley and a potential PIAA state playoff opponent. Corry’s tough serving and balanced offense was too much for the 4th ranked team in PVCA AA rankings (25-15, 25-20).
The second opponent was Cochranton and a potential District 10 playoff competitor.
Having swept two state ranked teams in Quaker Valley and Cochranton, Corry maintained their focus and well rounded skills to sweep Northwestern (Tuesday – October 16th opponent), Cambridge Springs, and Titusville. The six games saw Corry trail by one point four times combined, and led comfortably the rest of each game.
Corry was seeded first and never trailed beating fourth seeded (from the other pool) Crawford Christian Academy 25-14.
In the other semi-final, Cochranton took on the number one seeded Warren dragons, and Corry faced the second seeded Maplewood tigers. In a fast paced game, Corry tied the game at 3-3 on an Allison Sawyer kill assisted by Payton McCray. Maplewood scored four of the next five points and led 7-4 when Halle Albers scored a kill down the line. The lady beavers scored on more kills by Sawyer, Albers, and middle Sadye Dyne to advance the score to 11-8 Maplewood. Makenna Moore served up an ace to continue the three point game with the score 13-10, before Maplewood got hot, and scored four points along with a couple of Corry errors, stretched the lead to 19-12. Corry and Maplewood played point for point the rest of the game, resulting in a 25-18 win for the tigers of Maplewood. Warren beat Maplewood in the finals.
“It was a good tournament for us, playing seven different opponents, four tough teams – two of which we may see in future playoff events, getting a lot of playing time for all 15 players, and everyone healthy is a successful day.” commented coach Goodsel. “Obviously, we would like to have beaten Maplewood, but they passed really well and made very few errors. This is the downside of a tournament, only playing one set to determine whether we advance or go home.”
Four sophomores contributed to a successful day, Grace Allen led the team with 36 kills; Haley Mumau led the team with 59 assists; Regan Kemp had 9 kills as an opposite hitter (filling in for the recovering Emmalee Carr), and Rylee Nickerson had 6 kills playing opposite and middle hitter. Bryley Watrous led the three junior class members with 12 digs; while Bailee McCray had a balanced tournament with 5 digs, 1 kill, and 1 service ace; and Sydney Mineo had 4 service aces and 3 digs.
The senior contribution was balanced (as usual), with Halle Albers, Aubrey Chase, Allison Sawyer, and Sadye Dyne all collecting double digit kills (16, 14, 13, 11 respectively). Setter Payton McCray had a double-double with 52 assists and 22 digs. Makenna Moore led the team with 46 digs and Sydney Woods had 11 digs and 2 service aces. Opposite hitter Emmalee Carr saw limited playing time, as she’s recovering from an ankle injury, but did play well and will be ready for the playoffs.
