Corry Volleyball Head Coach

In a match-up of the two leading Region 4 competitors, Corry remained undefeated sweeping the Fairview Tigers on their home court Tuesday night 25-18, 25-21, and 25-13. Corry stands alone as the only undefeated Region 4 team, having beat both Cathedral Prep and Fairview (only teams with one loss in the region).

Corry jumped out to an early 6-2 lead with kills by seniors Allison Sawyer and Aubrey Chase, only to see Fairview fight back and take a 10-9 lead before Halle Albers earned a kill to tie the game 10-10.  Sadye Dyne and Allison Sawyer had back-to-back blocks and then Sadye Dyne’s back-to-back kills forced the first Fairview timeout with Corry leading 16-11.  Fairview took their second timeout trailing by five points 22-17 and Corry scored three of the next four points on an Aubrey Chase block, a kill, and Sadye Dyne’s kill finished off the game 25-18.

The second set was tied at 8-8 early in the game when Corry’s setter Payton McCray went back to the service line and after Halle Albers and Allison Sawyer kills and a McCray ace, Fairview took their first time out trailing 14-8.  Fairview battled back to only trail by one point (18-19) but missed the subsequent serve and two Corry kills by Aubrey Chase and Halle Albers, plus a block by Sadye Dyne, Corry closed the set out 25-21.

Corry took the lead at 5-4 on sophomore outside hitter Grace Allen’s kill and Corry never trailed again cruising to a comfortable 25-13 lead.  A couple of highlights in the third set were provided by sophomore Rylee Nickerson who pounded two kills.  Rylee (and sophomore Regan Kemp) was a right side hitter, replacing senior Emmalee Carr who was injured in the pre-game warm-up.

Senior Payton McCray led the team with 18 assists and sophomore Haley Mumau had 16 assists.  Defensively, the team was led by senior libero Makenna Moore with 9 digs.

“We didn’t pass particularly well throughout the match and as a result our offense was ok, but not crisp.  There were a couple of contributing factors that we will work on in practice over the next few weeks, and that should help our offense.  I thought our middles played really well, when we did get a pass to the net, our middles combined for 12 kills and hit at 350 pace.” commented coach Goodsel.  “While we didn’t play our best, Fairview is a good team and we were able to get the job done.  This puts us in a great position for the Region 4 championship and a very high seed in the District 10 playoffs.” continued Goodsel.

Corry improves to 8-1 on the year and are undefeated in region play at 5-0 and sit atop region four. The Beavers also remain the number one team in AA classification in Pennsylvania in the PVCA polls. Corry will host the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers in the Beaver Dam on Thursday night which will be Corry volleyball's annual charity night. JV will start the action at 6:00 PM with charity night festivities to follow and then Varsity action.
