Corry Volleyball Head Coach

Corry volleyball finished the regular season on the road last night, traveling to Saegertown to take on the Panthers.  After an error prone first set that Saegertown took in extra points, the Corry Lady Beavers were firing on all cylinders the rest of the evening to take the match 3-1 (25-27, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18).

The first point of the game was a big kill by sophomore outside hitter Grace Allen, foreshadowing the rest of the evening for Saegertown.  Seniors Sadye Dyne (middle hitter) and Halle Albers (outside hitter) followed each other with 4 consecutive kills, stretching the lead to 8-5, but after a number of uncharacteristic errors by Corry, Saegertown led 16-10 and coach Goodsel called the first time out.   Corry narrowed the lead and eventually tied the game 22-22 on another Dyne kill.  After a Corry service error, Albers hit a ball down the line for another kill, with the score 23-23.  Corry was up 24-23 on a Saegertown hitting error, only to have another Corry service error to tie the game up at 24-24.  Saegertown’s all-state middle hitter was able to pound the last two points off of the Corry block to win the set 27-25.

The second set Corry jumped out to an early 10-3 lead forcing a Saegertown timeout.  With the big lead the speed of the game started to pick up for Corry and slowed down for Saegertown.  With Corry leading 16-7, Allen pounded the next seven kills for Corry and helped close out the set 25-13.

The third set Corry was up 9-7, when the lady beavers went on a 10-5 run on kills by Albers, Allison Sawyer, and two kills each by Allen and Dyne.  Three consecutive kills by Albers set the stage for Sawyer to pound another kill for the 25-20 victory.

With Corry leading 6-4 in the third set, Corry’s balanced offense took over:  Allen, Albers, Emmalee Carr, and Dyne stretched the lead to 12-5.  Saegertown played point for point the rest of the game but couldn’t cut into the seven point lead and Corry closed out the win with a 25-18 score.

“The team really responded well after dropping the first set. I liked their mental toughness and maturity to recognize we didn’t play great in that set but we can just follow our training and we’ll be ok.” Said coach Kelly Goodsel.

“Grace, Halle, Sadye, and Emmalee were unstoppable in the front row, and Makenna and Sydney Woods kept almost everything that Saegertown hit off the floor.  It was a good match as we head into the District 10 playoffs.  We scheduled this tough opponent now on purpose to hone our skills and get mentally prepared for the next few weeks of playoffs.”

Leading the team statistically was Grace Allen with 24 kills, Halle Albers had a double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs, Sadye Dyne had 9 kills and 3 blocks, Aubrey Chase had 5 kills, 6 digs, and 2 service aces; Emmalee Carr had 5 kills, 4 digs and 3 blocks.  Payton McCray and Haley Mumau quarterbacked the offense with 31 and 30 assists respectively.  Allison Sawyer led the team with 2 service aces and also contributed 3 kills and 2 digs.  Defensively, Makenna Moore had 31 digs and Sydney Woods had 13 digs and a number of long service runs.

With 31 Gigs on the evening against Saegertown, Moore broke the all time career digs mark previously held by "the Human Highlight Reel" Hope Hasbrouck at 1,434. Makenna has set the new benchmark for digs at 1,446 with a tournament on Saturday and Playoffs to go.

Congrats Makenna. A fantastic player and leader on the court, and an even better person off the court!
