Blog report by Kelly Goodsel

Corry Volleyball Head Coach

Corry volleyball traveled to Union City Tuesday night to tangle with the Bears in the route six rivalry, moving to an 5-1 overall record after winning in three straight sets 25-8, 25-10, and 25-17.

Corry dominated from the service line earning 19 points on service aces and when Union City was able to return the serve, Corry ran a very efficient offense hitting over 200 for the match.  In the first set Corry jumped out 6-1 lead on tough serving by senior Halle Albers, and then stretched the lead to 16-3 on a number of kills and a service ace by senior Allison Sawyer.  Corry finished off the set with a big block by seniors Sadye Dyne and Emmalee Carr.

The second set, the Bears played tough the first twelve points and were only trailing 7-5 when Corry went on a scoring run behind service aces by seniors Sydney Woods and Makenna Moore to make the score 11-6 and strong kills by senior Aubrey Chase and two more kills by Emmalee Carr.   Junior Sydney Mineo had back-to-back aces and sophomore Rylee Nickerson had solo block to make the score 23-9 and Corry cruised to the 25-10 victory.

Corry and Union City battled early in the third set and were tied 13-13. Sawyer and sophomore Grace Allen took turns pounding two kills each and then Corry finished the match on a kill by Chase and Carr.

Sophomore Haley Mumau led the team with 18 assists and senior Payton McCray had 10 assists.  Defensively, the team was led by seniors Makenna Moore with 11 digs, Sydney Woods with 6 digs, junior Sydney Mineo with 4 digs, and Grace Allen had 7 digs and 8 kills.

Corry didn’t play a second team, but focused playing time on specific positions or situations.  Juniors Baille McCray did a great job in serve receive and playing left back defense, Brynley Watrous contributed in a serving specialist and middle back defense role.  Offensively, sophomore Regan Kemp played both outside hitter and opposite hitter in different sets.

“We controlled the match from the beginning with tough serving and I was proud of how we stayed focused throughout the match, both defensively and offensively even with a number of substitutions.  With homecoming week, the football game, a tournament Saturday, and the dance Saturday night, the kids could have been mentally exhausted and with the big match against Clarion tomorrow night, we could have gotten caught looking ahead.  The kids did neither, didn’t use the tired excuse, and didn’t look ahead… we played well.”

Corry’s overall record improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 4 competition. The Beavers also remain the #1 ranked team in the state in class AA  and will host the Clarion Bobcats, the #1 ranked team in the state in Class A on Wednesday night in the Beaver Dam. A reminder to the fans who attend the game that you can get free admission to this highly anticipated matchup by bring a non perishable food item. Corry Volleyball will be teaming up with David Corry Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram to benefit the food pantry. Corry will also host the Seneca Bobcats on Thursday night where the Corry volleyball program will celebrate Senior night!

Both games are a 6:00 PM start time with varsity action to follow. We encourage everyone to get out to these two big upcoming events. If you can't make it, they will be streamed live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream at www.deejexperience.com/corry-beavers
