The Corry Beavers football team traveled to North East on Friday night for their third straight homecoming game in a row. After the Beavers lost their own homecoming game two weeks ago against a tough General McLane team, Corry has been a wrecking ball for homecoming with a 28-21 win over Mercyhurst and now a monster shutout victory over North East 48-0.
The scoring for the Beavers commenced when Nolan Carey connected with Will Allen on an eight-yard hitch route. Allen proceeded to break a tackle and had fresh green turf down the way as he scampered to the house for a 53-yard touchdown. Zach Turben connected on the PAT, and Corry jumped out to an early 7-0 lead.
After forcing a Picker punt, the Beavers would set up shop at the 41-yard line with 1:53 to go in the first quarter. It took Corry one play to get into the endzone as Carey unleashed a bomb to Blake Cook in stride as Cook blew by his defender on the play for a 59-yard touchdown grab. Turben connected on the PAT to make it a 14-0 ball game.
As the Pickers gained a couple of first downs, the Beavers would force North East to punt again and take over possession at the 10:36 mark in the second quarter of play. The Beavers methodically dinked and dunked their way just past midfield when Carey would drop another dime, this time to Keaton Frisina for a big chunk play of thirty-plus yards. Conner Sterling would then take the ball on a jet sweep to the left for 15 yards setting up a one-yard touchdown run from Nick Lesher. Turben added the extra point and Corry led 21-0.
Corry forced a fourth and ten on the ensuing drive, and the Grape Pickers had to punt from their own 24. With the wind at his back and a friendly roll, North East's punter Joel Morey pinned the Beavers back at their own eight-yard line. The Beavers would eventually have to punt, and the Pickers were set up with great field position. On a third and five from Corry's 35, disaster struck for the Pickers in the name of Mason Savitz. Bryson Galloway dropped back to pass, and Savitz read the play the whole way, stepping in front of a pass intended for Jayden Wittman. Savitz made another house call, returning the interception 70 yards for the pick-six. Turben tacked on the PAT to make it 28-0.
North East would then set up the offense, trying to make plays against the Beavers' defense, who have stifled the Pickers all night. Galloway handed off to Pascal Laporte, who ripped off a huge 66-yard run, setting up North East with a first and ten at the Beaver 17. A couple of stuffed run plays would set up third and ten. Galloway would try throwing to the end zone, but it was into double coverage and Cook muscled the ball out of the air for the interception and a touchback.
The very next play, Carey dropped back to pass and hit Cook on the wide receiver screen. Cook broke a tackle and scooted 45 yards upfield. Another catch by Cook set the Beavers up with first and goal at the two, where Nick Lesher would plow his way in for another Beaver touchdown. Turben connected on the PAT to make it 35-0. That would remain the score at the end of the first half.
Carey's night would be done as he gave way to Lucas Baker to start the second half. The scoring, however, was not done. With 2:25 to go in the third quarter, Lucas Baker dropped back to pass on a third and one and hit Cook on a receiver screen. As he had done all night long, Cook made another huge play, spinning off a would-be tackle and sprinting 48 yards to pay dirt. Turben added the PAT and Corry extended their lead 42-0.
The last scoring play of the night had the Beavers at the 20-yard line of the Pickers with a first and ten. Baker handed the ball off to freshman Deion Canady who found a hole off the left guard and center then broke it to the outside for a 20-yard touchdown run. The PAT was blocked resulting in a 48-0 score, which would be the final.
Carey had a huge outing in the first half of action. He led the Beavers' passing attack, hitting seven different receivers, going 13 of 17 for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Cook led the Beavers in receiving, making huge play after huge play, with four receptions for a ridiculous 201 yards and two touchdowns. Allen had four catches for 76 yards and a score, Frisina had four catches for 61 yards, Savits had one catch for 29 yards, Lamech Albers had one for 15 yards, and Sterling had one for seven yards. Leading the way on the ground was Canady, who had six carries for 49 yards, including that 20-yard touchdown run. Lesher had seven carries for 11 yards and two touchdowns.
The Beavers improve to 5-2 on the year and will head to Fairview on Friday, October 11th, to battle the Tigers in a game that has huge region implications as both teams currently sit tied at the top of region five. Opening Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM. If you can't make it out to Fairview, you can watch all the action live on the DeeJ Experience Sports Stream at
