JV Volleyball Sweeps Cochranton

By Mark Brenner

Corry JV Volleyball Coach

Corry JV traveled to Cochranton on Thursday night and beat a competitive Cardinal team in two straight sets, 25-23 and 25-21. Both sets were close and hard-fought, with both teams having opportunities late in the sets to win. Corry was able to capitalize in the critical moments late in the sets and secured the win. It is always better to play a good team and have to fight for every point than to play a team that is not competitive. We are all about getting better, and tonight was a great opportunity.

Set one was a back-and-forth affair until libero Ali Yetzer helped open up a lead with a 7-point serving run, including an ace. Cochranton proceeded to also go on a serving run to tie the score, capitalizing on Corry's hitting errors, and then took the lead at 20-19. Corry did not give up but kept swinging aggressively at every opportunity and eventually won the set.

Set two had a similar trajectory. This time it was setter Haley Mumau who put together a 6-point serving run, including an ace. There was a lot of offense run by both teams, and both teams played good defense, but Corry had the edge in hitting, defending, and serving. This proved too much for Cochranton and made the difference in set 2. This was another good win against a competitive team, and I am proud of the effort put out in a hot Cochranton gym to secure the win.

Notable play and statistical leaders on the night for the Beavers included:

Mumau, who had a good night playing right back defense, digging up Cochranton attacks. Outside hitter Regan Kemp had 13 kills on 21 attempts, OH Lauren Brundage had 6 kills, and MH Rylee Nickerson also had 6 kills. Servers were led by Yetzer with 10 service points and 4 aces, followed by Mumau with 7 service points and 2 aces. The defensive effort was led by Yetzer with 13 digs, Mumau with 10 digs, and DS Ellie Carey with 7 digs. Setters Mumau, Ava Hallberg, and Naomi Brown had 12, 9, and 9 assists, respectively.

Corry JV improves to 2-1 on the year and will head to the Fort LeBoeuf JV tournament on Saturday.
