Corry volleyball swept Northwestern Tuesday night:
25-11
25-15
25-9
Corry volleyball finished region four competition undefeated after a sweep of the Northwestern Wildcats on the road Tuesday night. Lead by strong serving and a combined 14 Aces on the night, Corry Defeated the Wildcats 25-11, 25-15, and 25-9
Corry jumped out to a 4-0 lead with tough serving by Halle Albers and kills by Aubrey Chase and Grace Allen. Sadye Dyne, Albers, and Allen all collected two more kills each during the set and Allison Sawyer ended the set with 3 consecutive service aces.
The second set Corry really focused on running a faster tempo offense with big kills by Chase, Dyne, and Sawyer. While Northwestern scored a few more points on shots down the line or through the block, Corry didn’t get rattled and kept the pressure on the Wildcats until the end. In addition to the starting libero Makenna Moore and defensive specialist Sydney Woods, the junior trio of Bailee McCray, Brynley Watrous, and Sydney Mineo played solid defense. Emmalee Carr returned from injury to see playing time in the first two sets.
The third set saw the starters exit early and for much of the game it was the sophomore class that was in charge of the game. Haley Mumau setting, Rylee Nickerson and Kendall Donoghue in the middle hitter position, Regan Kemp as the opposite hitter, Alison Yetzer and Ellie Carey in the defensive specialist positions. When the team rotated to the next outside hitting position, freshman Lauren Brundage stepped in and smashed a kill to the floor.
“I was pleased with the focus and execution throughout the match. We ran our basic offense, we went up-tempo with 31’s, slides, and 6’s, and we played a total of 19 players – mixing and matching line-ups throughout the match. All the underclassmen played well, seeing their first career varsity action was Ellie Carey and Kendall Donoghue, and getting a few more varsity attempts were Ali Yetzer and Lauren Brundage.” said coach Goodsel after the match.
Leading the team statistically was senior opposite hitter Sawyer with eight service aces, three kills, and a block. Allen had seven kills, Dyne with five, and Albers had four kills respectively off of setters McCray and Mumau with 13 and 9 assists respectively.
Corry finishes region four play undefeated at9-0 as region champions and have an overall record of 12-1 on the year. Their last regular season match will be at Saegertown on Thursday night. JV opening serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM with the Varsity action to follow.
